In Øygarden the Redpolls that are seen during the winter months are almost invariably Mealy Redpolls. In the summer most, if not all, are Lesser Redpolls. What happens in between is anybodies guess but large numbers of Common Redpoll are often seen passing through in the late autumn.

Redpolls can be a tricky group to identify and many of those I see in Øygarden during the winter just go down as "Redpoll". Although redpolls are often not too scared of people they are amazingly active so obtaining good views, or even worse, good photos can be quite difficult. All of the pictures below were taken in very poor light at ISO  400 or 800

Although Lesser Redpoll is a common breeder in Øygarden they are seen very rarely here during the winter months - this is when the Mealy's tend to turn up.
