Himalayan
Monal at the Bumdrak campsite, Bhutan,
November 2017
Himalayan Monal
are another speciality of Bhutan. The birds we saw were around the
campsite at Bumdrak. They came out to feed in the evening as the light
was going and I spent some time creeping around to try and obtain
better photographs. I needn't have bothered as the guys who run the
campsite regularly feed them - they called a few times, flung some rice
on the ground and a male came right into the campsite. It was almost
dark by this time so I had to use some very high ISO values - but WHAT
A BIRD!
This
is the field guide I took with me to Bhutan and India. Although I had
heard that this guide may not be the best for Bhutan I had no
complaints as it covered everything we saw.

One
of the birds I spent some
time crawling through the scrub to get close to....
A habitat shot - showing the blue tents of the campsite around which
the Himalayan Monal showed up. Alpine Accentors fed around the temple
to the left of the campsite.
We walked up to the prayer flags at the summit pre-breakfast the
following morning.
