My experience has
shown
that shearwaters
can be hard to see offshore in the Mediterranean, often it is
only
occasional birds that are seen. The Bosporus and the sea of Marmora is
a different story - good numbers of Yelkouan
shearwater
can be seen here. Around the Balearics the aptly named Balearic
Sheawater can also be seen in large flocks - often close to land in the
breeding season when flocks gather prior to going ashore.
Normally only small numbers are seen with groups of several birds being
the norm. I saw relatively few heading
into the Mediterranean through the Gibraltar Straits in March / April
2011
This
