Balearic Shearwater - Balearlire - Puffinus (yelkouan) mauretanicus

Puffin des Baléares

A flock of yelkouan Shearwater pass through the sea of Marmora
Balearic Shearwater, off Ibiza, March 2011

My experience has shown that shearwaters can be hard to see offshore in the Mediterranean, often it is only occasional birds that are seen. The Bosporus and the sea of Marmora is a different story - good numbers of Yelkouan shearwater can be seen here. Around the Balearics the aptly named Balearic Sheawater can also be seen in large flocks - often close to land in the breeding season when flocks gather prior to going ashore.

Normally only small numbers are seen with groups of several birds being the norm. I saw relatively few heading into the Mediterranean through the Gibraltar Straits in March / April 2011
