Velvet
Scoter are seen regularly during both the spring and autumn migrations;
they are seen a lot less regularly and in much lower numbers during
both the winter and summer months than Common Scoter. There is a clear
peak in the spring migration leading up to mid May after which numbers
drop rapidly. Small numbers can be noted from early September onwards
with a peak in the autumn passage around mid October.
Velvet Scoter seem more numerous throughout the year at
Skogsøy than at Utsira, but especially so during the spring.
The blue line shows number of visits, the orange one the number of
visits when Velvet Scoter have been recorded and the green one shows
the maximum
numbers I have recorded in any three day period.
