Northern
Gannet, Skogsøy, October 2018
Gannets
are seen on almost all seawatches at Skogsøy, although they
are irregular from the end of November to the middle of February.
Average numbers tend not to exceed 100, although counts of double this
figure are not unusual. is a regular visitor in small numbers,
especially in July. Numbers tend to increase slowly towards mid
September before they drop off again.
Utsira, further to the south is generally considered a much better
locality for pelagic seabirds and indeed has much better day records
for both Manx and Sooty Shearwaters. Maximum counts of Northern Gannet
at Utsira, however, are very similar, or perhaps a little lower than at
Skogsøy - why is this?
The blue line shows number of visits, the orange one the number of
visits when Gannet have been recorded and the green one shows the
maximum I have recorded in any three day period.

Histograms produced this way are very biased towards observer effor -
and a lot more people spend a lot more time seawatching in late April /
early May.....The biggest counts are often in July.
Maximum: 904, 12 July 2003
