Ruff are a common autumn visitor in Øygarden. They are much rarer during the spring but only a few decades ago were a regular breeding bird at Tjeldstø. In common with other coastal breeding populations in Norway this breeding population has disappeared.

Over  much of Norway this species is declining rapidly but it is still possible to find in places like Engerdal

Record numbers of Ruff were seen in Øygarden during September 2017 with large flocks feeding in fields and many more seen on direct migration past places like Skogsøy
