Red-throated Diver (Loon) - Smålom - Gavia stellata

Red-throated Diver are a very common sight on migration in Øygarden (>1000 can be seen on the best days at Skogsøy) but are a lot less common during the winter months when they can turn up pretty much anywhere. For more details of this species migration in the area see this page.

The "scaly" back is a good indicator that this is a juvenile bird.

The following picture was taken in a very shady area and there was no way of using anything other that ISO 800. The joys of winter photography....
