Brünniche's Guillemot (Thick-billed Murre)
Brünniche's Guillemot, Shtokman Field, Barent's Sea, October 2010

Brünniche's Guillemot are a common bird in the Barent's Sea, I have seen them in varying numbers on most trips to the area. Small numbers also breed in Iceland where I have seen them on their nesting ledges. For many north european seawatchers this is a dream species but requires close views to confirm - many of us have probably seen this species without being aware of it.

For more about birding in the Barent's Sea click here and for the Shtokman field in particular click here

Numbers of Brunniche's Guillemot are falling in southern Iceland so this species is not as easy to see as it once was.
