Long-tailed Duck - Havelle - Clangula hyemalis
Alfågel  -  Havlit  - Alli - Ijseend - Eisente - Harelde boréale - Pato havelda

The population of Long-tailed Duck is dropping drastically and even in Øygarden it is nothing like as numerous as it was just 10 years or so ago. The reasons behind this decline are probably many and varied but for whatever reason flocks of these birds have become fewer and smaller. Thankfully they are still a common winter visitor to the waters around Øygarden. Good numbers are still occasionally seen passing Skogsøy on their way north during May. See Skogsøy page for further details about their migration.

These birds were photographed from land as they swam past - rather than from a small boat

The pictures below were taken from a moving boat using a hand-held lens on a crisp and cold winters day in Øygarden. A fantastic experience and often the easiest way to come within photo range of these seaduck.
